Week 6 Descriptive Essay Planning

Week 6 Descriptive Essay Planning

Q ASSIGNMENT: For this assignment, you will be writing an argument about a person, place, or thing that uses description to support your argument. This can be about a friend or relative, an object you use every day, a pet, a place you’ve visited, a souvenir, a room in your home, or simply something that is right in front of you at the moment. Be creative. Just remember that you are still writing an argumentative essay, not an informative essay. That means you are describing your topic in ways that support your opinion of the topic. Use what you’ve already learned about descriptive writing and basic essay structure to write your description. That includes: • An introduction that engages the reader and introduces your topic, your opinion on the topic (your thesis statement), and a preview of how your will support hat thesis statement. • A body section that addresses 3 or 4 aspects of your topic using sensory language and detailed descriptions. These should be structured in a logical manner such as moving chronologically, moving from the left to the right of the object, or by type of aspects such as physical aspects followed by psychological aspects. • A conclusion that brings a sense of closure without simply repeating your thesis statement. REQUIREMENTS: • 2-3 pages long • APA formatted (use the paper template) TIPS: • You are not writing in order to simply draw a picture in the reader’s mind. You are writing to prove a point about what you are describing. There is a difference between describing a house and describing a house in order to prove that it is frightening, comfortable, gigantic, or falling apart. • Naming something is not describing it. Don’t simply list aspects or qualities of your topic, explain them by using language that is appeals to the senses and provide details specific to the object. For example, there is a big difference between a dog having soft fur, and a dog having fur the color of sand and the texture of cotton balls. The first one could leave the reading seeing something much different than what you intended. The second it more specific and allows the reader to understand the topic in the same way as you.

Q THESIS What is your topic? What will you argue about this topic?Combine the two ideas above to write a thesis statement:1. Introduction A. What about your topic could be used to grab the reader’s attention? Do you have a story, idea, common connection, or little known fact to share?
